RESTRICTED („zastrzeżone”) classification in Poland – meaning, duration and obligations

Published: · Maksymilian Kruszewski

„Zastrzeżone” is the lowest Polish classification level, roughly equivalent to RESTRICTED. It still triggers statutory obligations for anyone who handles such information.

Duration

There is no fixed statutory period. Information remains protected until the classification is downgraded or removed with the written consent of the classifier or their superior; the classifier may set a date or event for this. Heads of organisations must review classified materials at least every 5 years.

Access and obligations

  • no personnel security clearance is needed – a written authorisation of the head of the organisation and training (repeated at least every 5 years) suffice,
  • processing in rooms with access control and storage in a metal cabinet, strongroom or locked office furniture,
  • an internal instruction approved by the head of the organisation,
  • ICT systems accredited by the head of the organisation, with documentation sent to ABW or SKW within 30 days,
  • no industrial security certificate is required for RESTRICTED contracts; a protection officer is needed only if the information is processed on the company's own premises.
