AI Officer in a company – role, tasks and whether it is mandatory
Published: · Maksymilian Kruszewski
Companies increasingly use many AI tools at once. Someone needs to know which tools are used, what data goes into them and what obligations follow. That is the AI Officer's role.
Is it mandatory?
No. The AI Act does not require an AI Officer, unlike the GDPR, which requires a DPO in certain cases (Article 37 GDPR). The AI Act does, however, impose obligations on AI literacy (Article 4 AI Act), transparency (Article 50 AI Act) and, for high-risk systems, human oversight and monitoring (Article 26 AI Act).
Tasks
- register and risk classification of AI tools,
- review of new tools and vendor terms,
- AI use policy and staff training,
- trade secret protection and incident handling.
